“YOUR BACK IS STRAIGHT. Heels are down.” Grace smiled at Austin. “You look good.”

“Thanks. It feels good.” Austin smiled proudly as they rode their horses side by side down the trails through the woods bordering Sean’s land.

“Can we gallop now? Finally?”

A natural with his horse, he’d done well with the trot and canter. Add to that the fact that his horse was well-trained and mild-mannered, and they had a nice long open field ahead of them, and Grace found herself saying, “Why not? Just before we head home.”

“How do I do it?”

“You may need to press your feet against your horse’s belly to get him going. Or you can try asking him for what you want. You’ll figure out how to get him going. Once you do, lean forward, keeping your back straight. Stand on your feet and give your horse the reins. Like this.”

She made a clicking sound. “Let’s go, Louie.” She leaned forward in her saddle as Louie swiftly transitioned from trotting to an all-out gallop. Louie had always been an easy ride, but he was the smoothest galloping horse she’d ever experienced. The wind in her hair felt wonderful as they flew across the field in no time. She might even go so far as to say she never felt better than when she was riding.

They reached the fence on the other side. Louie slowed and she turned in her saddle in time to see Austin coming up behind her, a wide smile on his face as his horse came to stop next to Louie. “That was amazing,” he said, laughing. “I think I’m starting to get this whole horse thing.” He glanced over at Grace, suddenly serious. “Thanks.”

“You’re more than welcome.”

“Can we do that again?”

She chuckled and, without another word, signaled to Louie to head back the way they’d come. She and Austin flew across the field. By the time they were finished and trotting back into the yard, they were both laughing. Grace found Sean leaning against a fence post near the field in which they’d been riding. Apparently, he’d been watching them. Austin seemed to turn expectant, as if he wasn’t sure what kind of reaction he was going to get from Sean.

“Looks like you’ve been working pretty hard,” Sean said to his son. “That saddle feeling pretty comfortable?”

Austin nodded.

“Okay, then. Go find Eric. Tell him I said you’re ready to lead your own groups on the trail rides, and don’t forget to take care of your horse at the end of the day. Diego’s yours.”

“For the rest of the summer?”

“Yep. Anytime you want to come back to Mirabelle, he’ll be here waiting for you.”

As if he didn’t know quite what to say, Austin smiled and turned Diego around toward the riding stable. “Thanks, Sean,” he called over his shoulder.

“Don’t thank me.” Sean glanced at her. “Thank Grace.”

“Thank you, Grace,” Austin called over his shoulder, a big grin on his face. “Again!”

Then she was alone with Sean, and despite the awkwardness between them, she had to say something.
